    • Observe whether Earth is habitable

      • Scientists using ESA’s Venus Express are trying to observe whether Earth is habitable. Silly, you might think, when we know that Earth is richly stocked with life. In fact, far from being a pointless exercise, Venus Express is paving the way for an exciting new era in astronomy.

  2. Venus Express entered its target orbit at apoapsis on 7 May 2006 at 13:31 UTC, when the spacecraft was 151,000,000 kilometres (94,000,000 mi) from Earth. At this point the spacecraft was running on an ellipse substantially closer to the planet than during the initial orbit.

  3. Venus Express was captured into an orbit around Venus by firing the main engine for 53 minutes. About five days later, a two-week long series of manoeuvres began putting the spacecraft into its operational orbit, circling above the poles of the planet once every 24 hours.

  4. Jan 3, 2020 · Venus Express was the European Space Agency's first mission to Venus, the second planet from the sun. The 2,800-pound spacecraft spent eight years circling the shrouded planet, watching long-term...

  5. Nov 9, 2005 · Venus Express was ESA's first spacecraft to study our nearest planetary neighbour. In particular, it investigated the noxious atmosphere and clouds in detail and made global maps of the planets surface temperatures.

  6. Nov 9, 2005 · Venus Express was ESA's first spacecraft to voyage to our nearest planet; it was built around the design of Mars Express, making it quicker and cheaper to develop. It studied the planet's complex dynamics and chemistry, and the interactions between the atmosphere and the surface, which provided clues about the surface’s characteristics.
