- Sociological questions consider the structural dimension of the issue and strive to understand the bigger picture. We ask sociological questions because the individual-based, victim-blaming questions that are typical in our society do not tell us the full story.

As a sociologist, we might ask different questions: Why did one person think it was appropriate to abuse another? What is about our society that makes intimate partner violence common? Do the lack of structural supports (i.e., legal, financial, familial, occupational, or educational) contribute to individuals staying in unhealthy situations?

- Ask a Question or Find a Research Topic. The first step of the scientific method is to ask a question, select a problem, and identify the specific area of interest.
- Review the Literature/Research Existing Sources. The next step researchers undertake is to conduct background research through a literature review, which is a review of any existing similar or related studies.
- Formulate a Hypothesis. A hypothesis is an explanation for a phenomenon based on a conjecture about the relationship between the phenomenon and one or more causal factors.
- Design and Conduct a Study. Researchers design studies to maximize reliability, which refers to how likely research results are to be replicated if the study is reproduced.
Sociologists often begin the research process by asking a question about how or why things happen. It might be a unique question about a new trend or an old question about a common aspect of life. Once a question is formed, a sociologist proceeds through an in-depth process to answer it.
Most of us think that our experiences are a full and true reflection of society overall, but sociologists fight against this assumption that our individual experiences are necessarily reflections of the larger society. For a concrete example, take an issue like poverty.
