The Reserve was established in 1978 by Congress to preserve and protect a rural community which provides an unbroken and vivid historical record of Pacific Northwest history, from 19th century exploration and settlement to the present time. Ebey’s Landing includes 25 square miles of a cultural landscape in the heart of Whidbey Island.
Currently, the signage and historical record of Ebey’s Landing has focused predominantly on the white colonial settlement of Whidbey Island. As you walk along the trails, signs amplify a Western perspective of the landscape by primarily narrating the arrival of settlers, the life of the Ebey family and the agricultural development of the area.

In 1850 Isaac Ebey (1818-1857), the first permanent white settler on Whidbey Island, claimed one square mile (640 acres) of mostly prairie land on a bluff overlooking Admiralty Inlet on the island's east side, 320 acres in his name and 320 acres in the name of his wife, Rebecca, who at the time remained in Missouri.
