1) The town was meant to be named after Union army cavalry Major General Alfred Pleasonton, with two O’s, but a U.S. Postal Service employee made a typo, and Pleasanton was born. 2) Pleasanton was preceded by a town called Alisal, known as “The Most Desperate Town in the West.” In 1894, it became part of Pleasanton.

Oct 1, 2004 · In the late 1830s, most of Alizal land, as Pleasanton was called, had been granted to Mexican politicians and soldiers as part of the Rancho el Valle de San Jose land grant. In 1867 the name was changed from Alizal to Pleasanton, the misspelled effort of pioneer John Kottinger to name it after Civil War General Alfred Pleasonton.
Pleasanton is located on the lands of the Rancho Valle de San José and Rancho Santa Rita Mexican land grants. Its name was chosen in the 1860s by John W. Kottinger, an Alameda County justice of the peace, after his friend, Union army cavalry Major General Alfred Pleasonton.
