Experiences in English language arts and literature help students develop deep understandings of others and themselves, build and strengthen interpersonal relationships, and engage in responsible citizenship. Final Curriculum: Implemented September 2023.
English language arts and literature is essential to foundational literacy and communication skills. It prepares students for ongoing learning as they build successful and fulfilling lives and make meaningful contributions to their communities and the world.
Students learn to access and communicate information through language arts. Viewing and representing take on new importance in managing ideas and information; through these language arts, students learn to enhance the clarity and effectiveness of communication.
The study of Canadian literature helps students to develop respect for cultural diversity and common values. By studying works of literature, students come to understand how text creators use language to produce effects, such as suspense, humour and pathos, and to create multiple layers of meaning.
This guide has been prepared by Alberta Education to provide students with information that will increase the likelihood of their success on the English Language Arts 30-1 examination.
