Cognitive Load Theory (CLT) My choice of these nine theories stems from a synthesis of three major books on learning theories: Schunk (2020), Lefrançois (2019) and Harasim (2017).
- Behaviorism. Also called: Behaviorist learning theory. The behaviorism learning theory was largely influenced by psychologist B.F. Skinner. This theory suggests that we learn behaviors through external forces rather than internal forces.
- Cognitivism. Also called: Cognitive learning theory. The cognitive learning theory focuses on thought or cognition. It’s based on the ideas of psychologist Jean Piaget — particularly what he called schemas, which are ways we organize information and knowledge.
- Constructivism. Also called: Constructivist learning theory. Think about the root word of this learning theory: construct. That’s a great starting point for this educational theory, which asserts that knowledge is constructed.
- Humanism. Also called: Humanistic learning theory. This learning theory all comes back to Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, which shares five tiers of human needs in a specific order
Institutions can adopt an established learning principle as a guide for setting goals, and an individual instructor might use learning theories to create lesson plans that appeal to various learning styles. Learning styles differ between students, and they refer to how an individual processes, understands, and applies new information.
Learning is the change in knowledge, behavior, or understanding that occurs when people make connections between new information and their existing knowledge. Various theories attempt to describe the factors that enable the learning process. Learning does not happen in the same way or at the same time for all students.
