Jun 22, 2021 · Photos app is unbearably slow (M1, Big Sur) I have a 120 GB Photos library on an external USB 3.0 drive (formatted as MacOS extended (journaled)), connected to my M1 Mini and the latest Big Sur. Photos is so slow that it's almost unusable. I've run speed tests on the drive and it seems fine, and there's plenty of free space on the drive.

Dec 12, 2018 · Stumbled on a solution on the stackexchange: on your Phone > Settings > Photos > Transfer to Mac or PC > Set to Keep Originals. This is a dumb setting, took me so long to figure out the issue. If this is set to Automatic it was up to about 7 hours to convert and transfer ~60 GB of pics and vid. When it was set to Keep Originals it took ~35 minutes.
