This of course runs into the problem that some very iconic people are "Rangers". Drizzt is a "ranger" (though really he is a Fighter with a Ranger dip). Aragorn is a "ranger" though really he is a Fighter with a Noble background. So there is a real disconnect between what people THINK a Ranger is and what it ACTUALLY is.

Yup. A properly placed ranger eliminates a bunch of stuff to track and try. I feel like the ranger is a great answer to play style control for the adventure. If you pick a ranger, your party should thank you every time they don’t starve or get lost cause someone chose to bypass those issues.

They're strong at early levels because they get all their combat features early, but they have poor scaling at higher levels (11+). Also, the beastmaster archetype was awful. 2.
