Oct 11, 2021 · For a while the building that now houses the Academy Museum was called LACMA West after being acquired by LACMA in 1994. In 2017, the building was renamed in honor of philanthropist Cheryl Saban and entertainment executive Haim Saban's $50 million donation to LACMA.
After being vacant for two years, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) acquired the building in 1994 and used it—under the name "LACMA West"—as exhibition space. [ 5 ] [ 6 ] In 2014, the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures agreed to a 55-year lease with LACMA to include the May Company Building, as well as the adjacent land to build the David Geffen Theater.

In 1999, the building became part of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) campus and renamed LACMA West, according to the Los Angeles Conservancy. Prior to this location, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences had purchased another site for the museum.
The May Company Wilshire building was leased to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as the site of its Academy Museum and renamed the Saban Building. 1999 The building reopened as LACMA West, thanks to support from former Supervisor Ed Edelman who worked worked with the May Company and the Museum Associates to acquire the building for LACMA.
