Level 4: Simple sentences with a combination of sounds and scribbles. Students have a basic understanding of correct sentence structure. They copy sentence starters and write some common high-frequency words. They attempt to sound out words, but may flip or muddle some sounds or rely on ‘magic’ writing for some words.
- Fine Motor Practice. Many children dislike writing because it requires fine motor skills, which can be challenging for them. Building endurance is key since writing proficiency requires stamina.
- Start with Basics. Before you can teach your little learners to write, they need to understand the basics of written language. This includes understanding that letters make up words, words make up sentences, and sentences make up stories.

Quick-Start Routine. My kindergarten writing routine begins first thing as students start every day with morning journals. This ensures daily writing practice and makes for a soft start for teaching my students. Usually I project a prompt on the board to inspire students. At the beginning of the year these are a simple picture or word to copy.
