As to why it failed - Space was simply way ahead of its time because ad-funded mainstream networks at the time did not have to compete with subscription-funded cable networks. So there was no way it could afford to promote an innovative product the way it needs to be to sustain it economically.
It's an example of an expensive show with a great initial premise killed by poor execution and scheduling, leading to low ratings and cancellation. For example, the pilot sets them up as space Marines but suddenly in episodes they are ground pounders no long based on a ship.

Oct 2, 2018 · The series was cancelled after only one season, and I remember reading somewhere online, a few years after it was cancelled, that the producers had written the whole plot for the series but couldn't release it to fans due to copyright issue or something similar.
