At the moment you attempt to send, your iPhone must be logged in with the the same Apple-ID, must be powered on, and Must have adequate CELLULAR service (not just Wi-Fi service).

Jul 26, 2021 · The iPad cannot send messages to non-iOS users unless you have it configured with Text Message forwarding to an iPhone. On your iPhone, go to Settings>Phone>Text Message Forwarding and select your iPad.

Sep 16, 2024 · If you aren’t using iMessage or RCS, you can use SMS/MMS. SMS and MMS text messages can be sent to non-Apple devices as well as another iPhone or another Apple device with Text Message Forwarding turned on. With SMS/MMS, you can send texts, photos and videos, links, and more.
Jul 31, 2015 · I can no longer use the iMessage program on my Macs nor can I use the Messages app on my iPad / iPod (okay, iPhone 5 with no cell signal) to text message friends that are not themselves Apple iPhone users.
With the "Send as SMS" option enabled, the iPhone will send messages as texts if an iPhone user is not online. If you want to ensure that the phone does not send iPhone users regular SMS messages, turn off the "Send as SMS" option after sending a message to a non-iPhone cell phone user.
