While it's taken longer than expected, we're finally about to get a sequel to 2017's Wonder Woman. Diana Prince is back in action, and this time she's facing the scariest enemy of all - the 1980s.

From the cast and crew to the release date to the plot, here's everything you need to know about Wonder Woman 1984.

Be sure to also check out everything we know about The Matrix 4 and everything we know about The Batman.

Wonder Woman 1984 is currently scheduled for release on October 2, 2020. It'll be the second DCEU film released in 2020, following Birds of Prey's February debut. The Wonder Woman 1984 release date has been delayed several times thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic - it was originally scheduled for November 1, 2019 before getting postponed to June 5, 20...

Warners kept DC fans waiting a long time for a real WW84 trailer, though a small amount of footage was screened exclusively at CinemaCon in April 2019.

The first full trailer finally debuted in December 2019. Check it out below:

Then watch our rewind Theater video for a closer look at the plot details revealed in the first trailer:

A second trailer debuted at DC FanDome in August 2020:

Patty Jenkins will return to direct Wonder Woman 1984. Jenkins also co-wrote the screenplay alongside Geoff Johns and David Callaham. Hans Zimmer will score the film, making Wonder Woman 1984 his first DC movie since 2016's Batman v Superman.

Gal Gadot will reprise her role as Diana Prince/Wonder Woman, making Wonder Woman 1984 her fourth DCEU appearance. Also returning (via flashback scenes) are Connie Nielsen as Queen Hippolyta and Robin Wright as General Antiope. Surprisingly, Chris Pine will also return as Steve Trevor, despite his character having died in the climax of the first movie.

1984 will add several major new characters to the fold. Chief among these is Kristen Wiig as Barbara Ann Minerva/Cheetah, the film's main antagonist. Pedro Pascal has been cast as business tycoon Maxwell Lord. Initially fans speculated Pascal might be playing another character like Doctor Psycho, but Jenkins confirmed the Maxwell Lord theory on Twi...

As the title suggests, the sequel will jump forward from World War I to the 1980s, as Diana confronts the consumer-driven culture of Reagan's America and becomes embroiled in a new conflicted sparked by Maxwell Lord. Given what we know about Diana's DCEU history in between the events of Wonder Woman and Batman v Superman, 1984 will probably show her trying to maintain a low profile until this new threat forces her to emerge from hiding and defend man's world once more.

The film will revolve heavily around the relationship between Diana and Barbara Ann Minerva, an archaeologist/gemologist who, in the comics, is often obsessed with finding the fabled lost city of Urzkartaga. After finding the city and encountering the goddess who dwells within, Barbara Ann is transformed into the deadly Cheetah. Previous DCEU movies have shown that Diana works as a museum curator, so we're expecting Barbara Ann to be depicted as a friend and colleague of Diana before falling to evil.

“In the lore, Cheetah is often someone who’s friends with Diana but jealous of her,” Jenkins told Entertainment Weekly. “And I feel like Kristen’s playing a character who’s both ends of the spectrum — she’s your warm, funny friend who’s kind and interesting and then can transform into something completely different.”

Pascal's Maxwell Lord will serve as another major antagonist in the film. In the comics, Lord once financed the Justice League International before outing himself as a telepathic supervillain. In the movie, it appears Lord will harness the power of the plant god Urzkartaga to gain incredible power, allowing him to grant the deepest wishes of everyone in the world. That appears to be the catalyst for both Steve's return and Barbara Ann's transformation. And naturally, Lord has a sinister agenda of his own.

There have been other theories surrounding the return of Steve Trevor. The first trailer certainly hints that this is the same Steve Diana knew and loved. Given that the character clearly hasn't aged since WWI, this could suggest that Steve is somehow transported away from the plane explosion that supposedly claimed his life, and into the future. Lord may also have a role in that. The movie could also be taking a page from the 1977 TV series by casting Pine as the descendant of the original Steve Trevor. Other, more outlandish theories have been floated, with filmmaker Kevin Smith speculating that Pine is actually playing the shape-shifting hero Martian Manhunter.

Whatever the explanation for Steve's return (and we explore some theories in greater depth here), expect his reunion with Diana to be one of the emotional centerpieces of the sequel.

Wonder Woman 1984 is a direct sequel to the first Wonder Woman, as well as the ninth entry in the DCEU overall. That being said, it's unclear how much direct impact the film will actually have on the larger DCEU timeline. Superheroes are all but an unknown phenomenon to humanity at this stage. We know from the opening of Batman v Superman that Thomas and Martha Wayne were murdered in 1981, so Bruce Wayne is still a child mourning the deaths of his parents. Clark Kent has only recently crash-landed in Smallville.

Whatever happens in Wonder Woman 1984, it's not going to result in Diana and the Amazons making their existence known to the outside world. Much like the first Wonder Woman, the goal is more to fill in Diana's backstory and continue her heroic evolution than it is to make substantial changes to the fabric of the DCEU. Given the general shift in focus with the DCEU lately and the emphasis on standalone, director-driven films, maintaining a cohesive shared universe is no longer DC's main goal.
