If Kijiji is the online version of a classified ad essentially it makes even more sense since posting an ad in the classifieds in an actual newspaper wouldn't be free either. The one problem I have with the change is that now people are spamming the jobs category with services ads so it makes looking for work a huge PITA.
Overall, remember that most people on Kijiji/Marketplace have no etiquette, and you shouldn't overthink it. If your item is desirable and well priced, real buyer will eventually show up. Your frustration is shared by pretty much any other frequent/regular seller and is just a fact of life.
