The name was steeped in North Carolina history -- during the Revolutionary War, Lord Cornwallis -- a leading British General -- called the fighters in the Charlotte area a “veritable nest of hornets.” It was a good name, just right, and the anticipation was overwhelming.
Shinn’s original name for the team was the Charlotte Spirit, but a name-the-team contest chose the “Hornets” instead. The team played in Charlotte for 27 years and in 2002, as the losses accumulated (they finished last out of 29 teams), the NBA approved the team’s move to New Orleans.
