I like mazda's version of M be because it wont change gears by itself; some cars when you're in M mode, they will upshift automatically if you red line it. I usually leave it in automatic for starts, then when the car hits 4th gear, i will switch to M and downshift to slow down or for downhills.

Jan 14, 2019 · D shifting vs M shifting. I read earlier about owners saying they got better gas mileage by using the manual shift in 8th gear compared to leaving it in drive. I tested mine this weekend and saw a reduction in my RPM's on the open road. Can anyone explain why when I shift from drive to manual it goes into 7th gear and the RPM's stay the same.

Dec 2, 2006 · On my 2,5 the hold button locks the tranny in the selected gear, does not shift even if overrevving, the rev limiter on 7500 rpm takes care of protecting the engine. I use the hold button quite a lot, hold in D is great if driving with some attack on twisties, takes away the sluggish response in the tall 4'th.

Sep 21, 2004 · I would think anytime you shift the auto transmission manually you might be building up more heat in the tranny. Heat kills auto transmissions. My 6 wagon even in the manual always shifts back to 1st. I just returned from a quick spin in a 6 S and it also did it, almost everytime.
